This week we talk cocktails, winter drinking, and skinny-dipping with one of New York’s leading cocktail aficionados, Selena Ricks-Good, founder of the noted cocktail-scene blog The Dizzy Fizz. Selena produces and hosts experiential cocktail events for connoisseurs and casual imbibers, writes extensively about cocktail culture, and knows a thing or two about where to find the best warm drinks for this frigid winter. Pour yourself a hot toddy while we chat with Selena…

You’re in Chicago and you need a beer. Happens to us all the time. Well today is your lucky day, because Chicago just happens to be one of the world’s great beer drinking towns, and you’re further in luck, because we know one of the world’s best beer drinking bars and it’s right there in Chicago! That’s right, it’s the Map Room. This week we’re hanging out with Laura and Jay from Map Room which opened back in ‘92 with a travelers’ theme, before they met brewer Greg Browne and members of the Chicago Beer Society. Through this relationship, Map Room has become one of the premiere stops for beer aficionados in Chicago. So grab a pint of your favorite suds while we sit down with Laura and Jay.
Falcons, Pats, wings, beers, huge flatscreens, and your crew. Perfect Sunday wish list, but where are you going to find all of that? Kelly’s TV is too small, Mike’s couch is too filled with Mike, and the options only get worse from there. That’s why you need to head to one of our top trending sports bars for the big game. Multiple TVs, a killer sound system, and all the wings you can eat? If you throw in an order of nachos, we’d take the under on seeing us there before kickoff.
Pull up a barstool and join us as we share a nightcap with International Woman of Mystery Teresa Rodriguez. Oh behaaave! Teresa is the author of many leather-bound books and writes two travel websites geared towards women traveling alone and women traveling with kids. With such an extensive travel history, Teresa is ready to share some of her favorites with us.
We felt this was the right time to give you a preview of what’s coming soon, and a quick recap of where we’ve been.
When we started NightOwl,our belief was that if we built a local search and discovery platform from scratch, and did so truly looking through the eyes of the person with his or her phone in hand, we’d end up with something that looks a lot different from Yelp or Google Maps. Why? Well, because when we’re out and looking for something, it’s pretty rare that we have no idea what we’re looking for. Usually we either know exactly what we want, in which case we Google the place, or we have a general idea – eating, shopping, sight-seeing, or getting drinks – but need help choosing the right spot. And if that’s the case, it makes a lot more sense to be using something that’s built for that specific need instead of an app that attempts to be all things to all people. It’d be like a carpenter who only owned a Swiss Army knife.
Have the winter blues? Seems like the world is upside down lately? Do ya just need a good laugh? We feel you. This time of year is always tough, and this year seems a little tougher, which is why you need to kick those endorphins into overdrive and run, don’t walk, to the nearest comedy club. Comedy clubs are where all of your favorite comedians hone their craft and you never know who might stop in. Just last week, Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld, Amy Schumer, Aziz Ansari, and Dave Chappelle all crashed the same show at the same New York club on the same night! If you’re feeling blue, or off your game, or for whatever ails you, laughter is the best medicine. Well, except for a VD; penicillin is probably the best medicine for a VD, but you know what we mean. Seriously, good luck with your VD. But go to a comedy club anyway.
This week we share a nightcap with a whiskey educator who is responsible for the trade education and advocacy for the entire whiskey portfolio at Diageo (Johnnie Walker, Crown Royal, Bulleit, Talisker, Lagavulin, J&B to name just a few!). Impressive? We’re drooling right now! A cocktail enthusiast and whiskey advocate – Todd is the kind of guy you want to be stuck on a desert island with, provided he’s bringing the whiskey. So pour yourself three fingers of your favorite brown spirit and belly up as we meet Todd Richman.
If you’re a real estate novelist, in the Navy, a waitress practicing politics, or a businessman slowly getting stoned, you probably know that feeling you get when you’re in a bar and your song comes on – it makes you want to just start belting it out as loud as you can, right? Well if you’re at a piano bar, that’s not only acceptable, it’s expected! Whether you want to channel your inner Billy Joel and sing along to classics, hear a bunch of professional singers sing your favorite show tunes, or just enjoy being around happy people singing and having fun, a piano bar is for you. And while most people will be happy to take your requests, try to be more specific than “Son, can you play me a memory?”
